- His extended family members included a U.S. president.

- His nickname was “stonewall” because he was like a stonewall on the battlefield.

- Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1838 at the bottom of his class.
- Nathan Bedford Forrest
- He had no military education and only about six months of formal education.

- Many other officers would say that he was very strict and harsh.
